Dosage Choices and the Reason to Use
There are many choices for most compounded medicines.
Hard gelatin capsules provide a versatile dosage form increasing patient acceptability and compliance. Ease of dosing, formulating and ingredient compatibility is by far the most common solid dosage form we offer. Our capsules come in a variety of colors and sizes. We even have Fun-Caps® designed to increase compliance with children, including bubble gum and mint flavored varieties. But we haven’t forgotten about our canine friends, we have bacon and beef flavored capsules for them too.
Compounded capsules provide a consistent release rate and reliability of dosing. When formulating a capsule, Pavilion Compounding Pharmacists, take into consideration each patients unique needs, including allergies, drug compatibility, diet restrictions, i.e. religious concerns, and release characteristics.
Need a lactose free, gluten free, non-gelatin formulation, we can provide your unique formulation.

Sodium Stearyl Fumarate NF
Pavilion Compounding Pharmacy is one of Atlanta’s leading providers of sustained release, extended release, and modified release capsule formulations. Examples include many hormone replacement therapy formulations, including progesterone, estrone, estradiol, estriol,DHEA, and testosterone. In addition to providing a slow release of active drug, the formulation provides protection from stomach acid breakdown of the bio-identical hormone.
Many drugs are broken down by stomach acid and require formulations designed to dissolve in the higher PH of the intestines, bypassing the stomach. Pavilion Compounding Pharmacy has the unique Delayed Release Capsules (DR) which are vegetarian and can also mask the odor and taste of bad tasting drugs. Examples of drugs used are budesonide, 5-methytetrahydrofolate, methylcobalamin, beclomethasone, vitamins, hormones, and any drug acid sensitive.
Another unique capsule we provide are oil-filled capsules. This method offers the Medical Provider another option to give their patient alternatives to powder filled capsules. Certain drugs, such as cyclosporine for dogs and cats are absorbed better with an oil filled capsules. Allergic to peanut oil used in the commercial progesterone product, Prometrium®, no problem, another oil can be used, including almond, olive, borage, safflower, or our powder progesterone capsules.
One of the most common topical formulations available, creams provide several important properties for drug delivery, skin protection, and other functions we at Pavilion Compounding Pharmacy can discuss with you and your doctor. Many of the creams that we routinely have available, have unique properties to meet a specific requirement for both physio-chemical or or therapeutic considerations. Some topicals such as doxycycline, must be formulated in an anhydrous base which avoids water which causes a degradation of the acitve drug.
Other drugs such as are used for transdermal pain relief need to be able to penetrate the top level of the skin and deliver the medication to the site of pain or neuropathies. In this case we want to use a high lipophilic, fat loving, formula to get through the skin. We commonly use Lipoderm®, PCCA's well studied formula to incorporate our active drugs. Drugs commonly used are ketoprofen, cyclobenzaprine, ketamine, gabapentin, diclofenac, baclofen, and others.
Lollipops as a dosage form
Medicated Lollipops offer our patients one of the most unique dosage forms available. Utilizing specific custom bases allows our compounding pharmacists to provide an elegant, well-tolerated dosage form that can provide many therapeutic options.
Examples of lollipop usages are:
1)Anesthetics: using lidocaine, tetracaine, benzocaine & others for throat and mouth pain
2) Pain relief: including fentanyl, codeine, ketamine, and a wonderful combination of diphenhydramine-lidocaine-& hydrocortisone in a Sorbitol Lollipop™ base

Sublingual Forms Including Troches and Rapid Dissolving Tablets
Many drugs can be formulated into an oral dosage form designed to rapidly dissolve in the mouth, under the tongue or buccal cavity. Our Rapid Dissolve Tablets (RDT) provide advantages to children, animals, hospice patients, and any other patient that has difficulty swallowing. Also, some drugs are better absorbed under the tongue, bypassing the stomach and liver's first pass effect. Rapid absorption can be an advantage for many drugs, including flumazenil for hypersomnia or benzodiazepine withdrawl therapy, cisapride in cats, due to their "finicky" nature. Many hormones, including progesterone can be formulated into a RDT. Have a flavor you prefer? No problem, we can offer several flavors that will makie this dosge form pleasurable.
Another version of the RDT is the slower dissolving Troches, which would then liberate the active ingredient. Drugs that are desirable can include local anesthetics, antibiotics, antifungals, hormones, pain medications, such as fentanyl and morphine. A wide variety of textures and formulas can be compounded including polyglycol or gelatin based versions and of course a wide variety of flavor profiles can be discussed to enhance compliance.

Two methods are used to dispense and formulate the medication. Either a capsule or a powder pak is utilized, making the addition of the active drug(s) uniquely easy.
Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Pellets
Sterile Hormone Pellets offer another alternative for bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. A trained physician implants tiny pellets, usually every 3 to 6 months. The sterile hormone pellets supply a steady supply of hormones without the peaks and valleys of other therapy choices. Both men and women can benefit from pellet therapy.
Pavilion Pharmacy has been compounding sterile bio-identical hormone pellets both for estradiol and testosterone for over twenty years. Many leading physicians across the country depend on Pavilion Compounding Pharmacy for quality pellets. Our pellets are sterilized by a unique method called gamma ray sterilization. This methodology provides a product that meets our criteria for safety, efficacy, and patient acceptance.
